a powerful superfood

So, Why Is Hemp So Powerful?

Here are the two main reasons hemp is truly a powerful superfood for your horse.

NUTRITIONAL VALUE

Incorporating hemp feed products into your horse’s diet is beneficial because of the hemp seed’s high nutritional content.

The hemp seed naturally has all 20 amino acids including the 9 essentials, and a very robust vitamin and mineral profile. It is an extremely high quality protein that is easily digestible. This bodes well for any horse but especially older horses.

HEAD TO HOOF™ NATURAL CARE FOR YOUR HORSE

Your horse is a real, natural, biological animal. Doesn’t proper care mean caring for the horse with real natural products?

Petroleum and synthetic chemicals certainly have their place in emergencies, but we have serious concerns about everyday use, mostly because they are not natural or truely biological.

Instead, we believe all a horse really needs starts with the basics. Real feed for the inside of the horse. Natural products for the outside of the horse. It’s simple.

Your horse needs real feed, clean water, natural products, and good training. Our hemp feeds for horses are 100% natural and include zero fillers. You can rest assured that you’re getting the most natural nutritional care to help your horse thrive.

How to Safely Use Hemp for Horses

At The Sturdy Horse, we offer tested and trusted hemp products for horses.

We use them on our own horses, too, and our neighbors jokingly call our horses “show horses” because they look so good!

Our hemp for horses is available in two forms: ingestible and topical.

Ingestible Hemp for Horses

Our top dressing, pellets and coarse ground feed all provide a safe way for you to incorporate the superfeed of hemp seed products into your horse’s diet.

Topical Hemp for Horses

Our Hoof Care products are favored by farriers and vets for the natural strengthening they provide for the horse’s hoof.

ingestible vs topical

BENEFITS & HOW TO CHOOSE

So, why would you choose ingestible over topical, or should you incorporate both into your horse's care routine? Let's dig in.

When to use

Ingestible Hemp for Horses

Our top dressing, pellets and coarse ground feed all provide a safe way for you to incorporate the superfeed of hemp seed products into your horse’s diet. Changing horse feeds should be done over a 7-10 transition period. Never feed any moldy or insect infested feeds because they can cause illness or even death. As with all natural care products, you will want to use the products consistently in order to achieve the best results.

Our dry real feed is great for Head to Hoof™ maintenance, like the name says. Any horse from 10 months on up will benefit from this feed. It supports a healthy coat, mane, tail and hoofs because goodness on the outside comes from the inside.

We have even fed horses with poor or no teeth the course ground feed with beneficial results. The dry feed has less of the fatty acids or oils than the Top Dressing and more of the protein and fiber. This is a result of cold processing techniques to retain as much nutritional value as possible.

The Top Dressing oil has less protein and more fat. This is ideal for horses that are high performance or working hard. It is also ideal for horses that need to put on some weight. We have performance horses that use the dry feed and the top dressing for complete benefit.

when to use

Topical Hemp for Horses

Our Hoof Care products are favored by farriers and vets for the natural strengthening they provide for the horse’s hoof. It is a topical oil applied regularly to the horse’s hoof in order to help maintain hoof moisture and protect from too much moisture.

So, if the environment is too dry, put on the oil. If it is too wet, put on the oil. It works both ways.

Our proprietary blend of oils help strengthen the hoof with natural lignans and anti-inflammatory properties. There are no chemicals or petroleum products in The Sturdy Horse hoof care because anything that goes on the foot goes directly into the horse.

You now have confidence in using a natural product that will protect and won't poison your horse.

your big question

Is Hemp Safe and Legal?

First, let’s address the big question: Can my horse get high on these products?

Answer: Not a chance.

All of our products are made with high quality hemp seeds which contain only trace amounts (non-detectable) of THC which is what is responsible for the “high” feeling most often associated with cannabis products. We only use certified seed in compliance with the 2018 Farm Bill and current USDA guidelines.

Are these products banned substances?

Hemp seed foods for horses are not banned nor detectable in drug tests. As you learn here on our Hemp 101 page, our hemp seed products contain only trace amounts (non-detectable levels) of the cannabinoids that make CBDs a banned substance.

That means the hemp seed products you find here on The Sturdy Horse site are safe for your performance horse and will not keep you or your horse from competing. Here is an example: one of our sponsored trainers’ horses was tested after a dressage show. The horse has been consuming our feed and top dressing for months prior to the show and passed the drug test.

Right now, the CBD is banned for most if not all professional horsemanship events. We believe the powers-that-be will eventually adjust their protocols to allow for the use of these helpful compounds once they get educated on the subject.

CBD for horses is currently looked upon as “Performance Enhancing.” Even though it is not a drug, CBDs definitely can be performance enhancing because the body is working better, together, naturally.

So, if you are competing or plan to compete, you can safely use hemp seed products for your horse, but avoid CBD products, even CBD Isolate and Broad Spectrum products… for now.
